Shara Proctor was just one jump away from becoming World Champion before American Tianna Bartoletta took the gold medal with a personal best jump of 7.14m. Proctor extended her own British record to 7.07m with the forth jump, and held the lead right until the final round when Bartoletta took the win. Proctor had one jump left, but was unable to jump further and had to settle for the silver. Behind her in second, Proctor became the first Brition to jump over seven meters. Serbia's Ivana Spanovic took bronze with a jump of 7.01m.

England beat Australia by seven wickets to win the first of three Twenty 20 Internationals to keep alive the hopes of retaining the Ashes. Australia still lead the series 8-4 after earlier winning the test match and two out of three ODI's, with just two more T20's remaining (both worth two points). Needing to win all three T20's to draw the series and keep hold of the Ashes, England made the perfect start as Anya Shrubsole backed up a great first over from Katherine Brunt by dismissing opener Elyse Villani in the following over. That wicket brought Aussie captain Meg Lanning to the crease, joining Ellyse Perry who was opening, and the pair started to build a dangerous partnership. Danielle Hazell, recalled to the England squad for these T20 matches, struck in the tenth over having Lanning caught by Lydia Greenway inside the Cow Corner boundary.
England beat Italy 2-0 at the EuroHockey Championships at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London to qualify for the semi-finals. Helen Richardson-Walsh scored her 25th international goal to put her team ahead and Nicola White added a second just before the final whistle. England started the better of the two sides and without Italy goalkeeper Martina Chirico could have been leading by the end of the first quarter. Italy grew into the game, and enjoyed a good spell of possession after in the second quarter but couldn't find a breakthrough as England looked the more likely to score.
Serena Williams has won the 69th singles title of her career by winning the Cincinnati Masters, beating Simona Halep in the final in one hour and nine minutes. The win moves Williams up to fifth place on the all-time list, above former Australian player Evonne Goolagong. Halep broke serve in the opening game of the match, but Wimbledon champion Williams fought back and won five games in a row to take the first set 6-3. In the second set, Halep once again threatened on the Williams serve and set up three break points in the first game.
England Women have added spinners Danielle Hazell and Danielle Wyatt to T20 Ashes squad. The three Twenty-20 matches, which take place in Chelmsford, Hove and Cardiff over the next week, make up the final games of this summers Women's Ashes series. Australia currently lead the series 8-2 after winning the stand alone test match in Canterbury after England's batting line-up collapsed.
Jessica Ennis-Hill has won World Championship gold to mark an amazing return to athletics after injury and the birth of her first child. Ennis-Hill, who hadn't competed in a major championship since the 2012 Olympics, performed well on the opening day to lead overnight and wrapped up victory with the 800m on Sunday in Beijing. After the first four events, a British one-two was still very much possible as Ennis-Hill lead compatriot Katarina Johnson-Thompson. However the 22-year-old from Liverpool jumped three fouls in the long jump meaning that she registered zero points for that discipline and therefore ending her hopes of a first senior championship medal. Johnson-Thompson then had to complete the final two events, the javelin and 800m, knowing she wouldn't be competing for the top places and in the back of her mind wanting to conserve energy for the individual long jump, which she competes in later this week.
Reigning Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill leads the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships after the first four events. Ennis-Hill is in a commanding position in Beijing, her first major championships since London 2012, due to strong performances in the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m. Few were expecting Ennis-Hill to perform so well so quickly, given she gave birth to son Reggie just 13 months ago, but she always said she would only go to the championships if she had a realistic chance of medaling. And she seems on track to do just that, after opening with a solid 12.91 seconds in the 100m hurdles, second only to Dutch athlete Nadine Visser.

Captain Steph Houghton, fellow defender Lucy Bronze and goalkeeper Karen Bardsley made the list of 23 players. England beat Jamaica in the bronze medal play-off match to claim third place at the Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia. The Roses picked themselves up after the disappointment of a semi-final loss to New Zealand to achieve their fifth bronze medal, after also finishing third at the last World Cup in 2011. Going into the match, England and Jamaica have history with the Roses winning to finish third in 2011 but the Sunshine Girls beating them to claim bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. And both teams started well, going goal-to-goal in the early stages. But it was Jamaica that made the breakthrough, their athletic defence picking off some wayward English passes to feed Goal Shooter Romelda Aiken as they lead by five goals after the first quarter.
